Site Map
Site Map Use and Description
- Site Maps are hierarchical listings of the various pages which comprise a web site. They are useful as navigation aids for individuals who would normally use the Contents of a book or magazine as a guide.
- Use a Site Map as one of the navigation links to your site or use Site Map as an additional tool for a Help Page.
- Site Maps are also useful tools to determine how complicated your web site is becoming. Normally a site would be reasonable to navigate if it has pages which are 3 or 4 layers deep. Web pages buried much below the 4th level will not get much visitation unless they have additional links at the top-level page or one of the principal secondary pages (level 2 or level 3).
- The Site Map is generated automatically when you click on the Add Site Map button.
- Each listing in the Site Map hierarchy is a hot link to that particular page in your web site. Consequently, you should strongly consider adding a UR Here element to the bottom of each of your pages.
- By adding UR Here to the bottom of each page, you provide the end user an additional means of navigating easily to other pages of your site (see UR Here description for further details).
Add Site Map Button and Use
- Clicking on the Add Site Map button will generate a Site Map and place it on the page you are editing or creating.
- By using the Control Panel tools (see sidebar descriptions for Control Panel tool use) you can move the Site Map up or down on the page and create or remove spaces between the Site Map and other elements.
- One consideration for how to use the Site Map tool is to use the Add Page button to create a new web page for the site and on the new page use the Add Site Map tool to create a Site Map. Add UR Here (by clicking on Add UR Here button and move that element to the bottom of your Site Map page.
- This will allow users to use the Site Map as a navigation tool (by clinking on the link which was created when you used the Add Page button.
- Site Maps are usually identifiedwith plain vanilla names - as "Site Map," or "Map of Site," or "Site Index." Use one of these fairly common identifiers to name your Site Map.
